Digital workbench - State of the art

At the end of the journey through the history of information technology, HNF has a digital workbench, which presents the latest computer applications and technologies from all over the world for visitors to try out.

Laypersons and experts alike can study a varied range of applications - under proficient guidance or alone - at 16 multimedia PCs. Exhibits are selected according to the originality and modernity of their technical solutions as well as to visitors' interests. Especially popular applications are kept in the exhibition longer than others.

This part of the exhibition is intended to present high-quality electronic entertainment, impart knowledge in a playful manner and, above all, illustrate the tangible benefits of information and communication technology in many areas of life and work.

We want visitors to HNF to be able to cope with future technical developments at an early stage. It is our aim in Paderborn to present visionary product ideas, as well as prototypes from the fields of science and research.

Aspects that have been featured so far outline the range on the digital workbench: surfing the Internet, flight simulators, digital libraries, teleworking, hardware and software for the disabled, authoring systems, computer-aided health diagnosis, road congestion simulations, online magazines, multifunctional smart cards and an electronic mailbox for visitors' suggestions.

Our "shopping list" for the future includes computer chess, interpreter telephones, neural applications, geographical information systems, voice recognition and robot control. We plan to give visitors the opportunity to experience the complexity of today's technical, economic and ecological processes by means of strategy and simulation games.

In future, the latest prototypes and innovations from the areas of microelectronics and peripherals technology will be presented in special showcases, as examples of the way our daily life has gone digital and electronic. The information wall that belongs to the digital workbench will provide the latest information from the world of computing, and will enable visitors and experts at HNF to exchange information at ease.
